The key to understanding what makes your dog tick – are Hounds for you?

Choosing the right dog for your family is so important. Some people make the mistake of simply making this decision based on size. Knowing and understanding the various breeds gives us much more insight and I believe it is key to know what your dog was bred to do. A family might fall in love with a breed without understanding their nature. With great joy, excitement, and ignorance they bring the puppy of their dreams home and intend to provide him/her with the most extraordinary life. But, unfortunately, with our modern lives they may not be able to provide the attention or environment in which the dog will thrive and exist like he was originally bred to do. This understanding is so vital in allowing you to connect with your dog positively and depend your family’s joy rather that feeling overwhelmed by a dog that has not fitted into your family.
Last week we looked at Gundogs, this week we turn our attention to Hounds.
If you are considering a hound be aware that they were bred as hunting dogs, both for sport and to put food on the owners table. They have excellent noses and are built for speed and the chase. Examples from this group is your Rhodesian ridgeback, Greyhound, Beagle, Dachshund and Bloodhound. Some will have acute scenting powers while others will might have the phenomenal gift of stamina.
Hounds make affectionate family pets and really thrive in a loving household where they can be part of the family. They need a good amount of exercise but will also enjoy resting at home. They will generally excel in dog sports and remember these breeds where designed to track and chase down prey.
The simple truth is that if you fail to understand what makes your dog tick, you could be tearing your hair out in frustration rather that enjoying your four-legged family member.
